From a 10-member Facebook group to a global community of nearly a million — this is the story of Flat & Flatmates.
Ripped pockets and the “Bachelor” tag
After their jeans pockets got emptied by multiple brokerages and the constant discrimination of the ‘Bachelor’ tag, a small group opened a Facebook group called ‘Flat And Flatmates Ahmedabad’ with just 10 members.
The vision was simple: create a network of people joining hands to help each other find a home — and emergency friends — in a new city. No brokers. No discrimination. Just community.
Today that vision has grown into communities active in 92+ cities of India, with a global footprint in London, New York, Florida, Toronto, Melbourne, and Vancouver.
Our journey, milestone by milestone
A Facebook group was born to fight brokerage fees and the Bachelor tag. The goal: help people find homes and build emergency friendships in new cities — for free.
The model spread to 92+ Indian cities. Community groups formed organically in Bengaluru, Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, and beyond — all built on the same principle of trust.
When COVID hit, bachelors faced sudden evictions and racism. The community responded with the #StayPositiveIndia art movement, legal relief efforts, and shelter drives for homeless and daily wagers.
Communities expanded to London, New York, Florida, Toronto, Melbourne, and Vancouver. The network now serves Indians and expats worldwide navigating new cities.
Legal awareness programs, offline clubs, interior design partnerships, and property management services now make Flat & Flatmates a full-service community platform for renters.
The Stay Positive Movement
When COVID-19 hit in March 2020, bachelors faced a new wave of discrimination — sudden evictions, racism, and doxxing. The community mobilised globally, launching a 2-month art campaign featuring artists from across the world.
Offline, the team weeded out fraudulent travel channels, secured legal shelter for homeless people and daily wagers, and helped pass government orders for relief — all while the online campaign was running.
